On the first Saturday of the 2013 college football season, its breakout star is unquestionably Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams.
Just as Appalachian State's monumental upset of No. 5 Michigan in 2007 introduced a national audience to quarterback Armanti Edwards, now a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, Adams was sensational in directing only the third upset of a ranked FBS team by an FCS opponent since 2000 (James Madison upset No. 10 Virginia Tech in 2010).
Top 10 unheralded prospects
Everyone knows the headliners, but Bucky Brooks identifies the 10 under-the-radar college football prospects with potential to shine at the next level. **More ...**
Adams completed 23-of-30 attempts for 411 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the 49-46 win.
Drawing comparisons from the broadcast crew to Seattle Seahawks sensation Russell Wilson, Adams was definitely that dangerous as he sliced through a defense with some intriguing pieces, notably defensive end Scott Crichton. Eastern Washington punted only once.
Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion threw for 422 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, driving the Beavers into position for a game-tying 52-yard field goal as time expired, but the kick went wide to the right. Mannion's top target Brandin Cooks had 13 receptions for 196 yards and two touchdowns, but was injured making the catch that set up the try for overtime.
A national audience will get another chance to see Adams in action, as Eastern Washington faces Toledo on Sept. 14 with ESPN streaming the game.
