Toby Gerhart is considering surgery after tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sunday, meaning the Minnesota Vikings' top two running backs could both soon be rehabilitating from offseason knee surgery.
"He does have an MCL for sure," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "We're in hopes that he will not have to have surgery, but we'll have to revisit it in about three weeks."
Gerhart, who rushed 109 times for 531 yards in his second season in the league, suffered the injury in Sunday's 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Star running back Adrian Peterson tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee in Week 16, and underwent surgery last Friday.
"He's back in town now, as you can imagine, going 100 mph with the rehab, doing a good job, and so far, so good," Frazier said of Peterson. "There are some benchmarks that he'll have to hit along the way, but at this point, everything is moving in the right direction."
