So maybe Brett Favre isn't quite done yet.
The Minnesota Vikings said Favre has been upgraded from out to questionable for Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears.
"Brett Favre attempted to throw the football two days ago and was unable to, due to pain in the SC joint and residual numbness from a brachial plexus injury," Vikings head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman said Monday in a statement issued by the team. "He declared himself out at that time. He woke up this morning feeling much improved. His symptoms and function have improved dramatically over the past 24 hours.
"In fairness to him and his team, he would like to be given the opportunity to play tonight if physically able."
Favre told NFL Network's Steve Mariucci on Monday afternoon that he would be on the first bus to TCF Bank Stadium before the game. But though Favre was not seen on the first Vikings bus to arrive at the stadium, he did arrive early in order to test his shoulder.
"His status changed. If a player's medical status changes, the team is supposed to change his playing status. That's what happened," Aiello said Monday. "The Vikings put out a statement about it, they felt better about it, he saw the trainer, and therefore it changes. When you put a player down on the injury report, it's an estimation of what it is. That situation changed today.
"Nothing in the policy prevents that, as long as there's a credible explanation. He's going to go out and throw, and see where he is," Aiello said. "The status is before the game, an estimation of where the player is, his status at that time. Then, on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, if something changes, then it changes."
Aiello responded to questions about Favre leapfrogging a doubtful status for the game.
"That's just quibbling," Aiello said. "In the judgment of the club and Brett, they didn't feel he'd be able to play. So he's out. Would it look better in retrospect if he was doubtful? Sure. But it's an approximation."
Vikings spokesman Bob Hagan says the team will watch Favre throw about two hours before kickoff and decide whether Favre can suit up for the outdoors game at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium.
Favre didn't practice all week because of a sprained throwing shoulder. The injury kept Favre out of last week's loss to the New York Giants and ended his NFL-record straight of 297 straight regular-season starts.
The Vikings are in the process of signing quarterback Rhett Bomar off the New York Giants practice squad, *The Star-Ledger* reported Monday, citing an anonymous source. The move has not been announced by either team, but Bomar was traveling to Minnesota on Monday according to the source.
The Vikings also announced Monday that left guard Steve Hutchinson has been placed on injured reserve with a thumb injury. The team promoted quarterback R.J. Archer from the practice squad to fill the empty roster spot.
