The Denver Broncos will open up offseason workouts Monday without Super Bowl MVP Von Miller.
Miller will not attend the Broncos' offseason program Monday because he has yet to sign his franchise tender and is still competing on "Dancing With The Stars," NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports. Rapoport adds that Miller will re-evaluate his decision if he loses the competition.
Since Miller has not signed his franchise tender, he is not under contract.
Mike Klis of KUSA in Denver first reported that Miller spoke with coach Gary Kubiak this week and expressed regrets that he would not be attending the start of offseason workouts because he doesn't have a contract.
The Broncos placed the exclusive franchise tag tender on the outside linebacker, worth $14.129 million for the 2016 season. Given what other pass rushers on the open market received -- Olivier Vernon, $52 million guaranteed with a $17 million per-year average -- Miller's current pay this year falls well below his value.
The Broncos latest offer is around $18 million per year, according to Klis. Ndamukong Suh is currently the NFL's highest-paid defensive player, averaging about $19 million per year.
It's not a surprise that Miller would not attend offseason workouts. Most players who have not signed their franchise tender don't show up for offseason programs. The Broncos went through this rodeo with receiver Demaryius Thomas last season, before inking him to a five-year, $70 million contract.
The Broncos have until July 15 to strike a long-term contract with Miller.
Plans for other franchise-tagged players:
1. Rapoport later added that Carolina Panthers corner Josh Norman, also unsigned and franchise tagged, will skip offseason workouts. The Panthers don't begin their program until April 25.
2. The New York Daily News reports that New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson isn't expected to show for voluntary workouts on Monday. Wilkerson is hoping to get paid or traded.
