The Pittsburgh Steelers could be targeting a cornerback with their first-round pick, and they have scheduled a meeting with one of this year's top prospects at the position.
Steelers.com reports that Washington's Marcus Peters will be visiting with the team Thursday.
While Peters might have as much talent as any cornerback in this draft, character issues have hurt his stock. He was kicked off the team at Washington in early November for issues with the coaching staff.
Peters (5-foot-11 5/8, 197 pounds) isn't a blazer, but he is athletic and physical, possessing the necessary skill set to be a press-man corner, and he would fit in the Steelers' secondary. Peters ranks 31st on NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah's list of the top 50 prospects, and Jeremiah touts the corner's "good size, play speed and ball skills."
Peters is considered a first-round pick by all six NFL Media analysts who have done mock drafts, and two of them have Peters headed to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers might be in as bad a shape as any team at cornerback, and definitely need an influx of young talent at the position. A safety or an edge rusher also could interest Pittsburgh in the first round.
