The Seattle Seahawks are in need of cornerback help. Could Antoine Winfield be the solution?
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told KIRO-AM on Monday that Winfield is a candidate to come out of retirement to help Seattle's secondary. Winfield has been out of the league since being cut by the Seahawks during training camp.
"He's knows his way around," Carroll said, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
The depth of the Seattle's stout secondary is being tested right now. Cornerback Brandon Browner is likely to miss at least a month with a serious groin injury. Walter Thurmond had been filling Browner's shoes admirably before being hit with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse (non-PED), according to Rapoport.
Rapoport reported Sunday that Thurmond likely will drop his appeal and begin serving his suspension immediately, meaning the Seahawks will need to fill his void beginning in Week 13 against the New Orleans Saints.
Winfield performed at a high level in his final season with the Minnesota Vikings, but the Seahawks cut the veteran just four months after signing him to a deal that included $1 million in guaranteed salary. Carroll obviously saw something he didn't like then. Carroll might be more willing to overlook any shortcomings given the circumstances.
