You either have a mobile quarterback, or you don't. The Tennessee Titans believe Jake Locker can do more on the ground.
Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains is on record saying the Titans are considering read-option concepts, and coach Mike Munchak hinted this week that Locker will have an opportunity to use his legs more next season.
"Jake brings that dimension to the game, but you have to be smart about it. You want to take advantage of all the skills he does have, though it's hard to survive if you're running it all the time," Munchak told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. "So it has to be a happy medium, and that's what we'll try and find."
Munchak said this year's Titans offense will "have a lot more things for Jake ... and you want defenses to worry about those types of things."
Locker's second season was an injury-riddled disappointment. Tennessee didn't do a good job of getting Locker out of the pocket, where he's shown ability to hurt defenses. His 7.1 yards per carry ranked first among the NFL's rushing quarterbacks, but he ran the ball 41 times for only 291 yards. By comparison, Robert Griffin III took off 120 times for 815 yards.
The Titans haven't been able to develop Locker the way they hoped, but turning him into Cam Newton or RG3 isn't the answer. Nor is it the plan, but the Titans promise to be a little less vanilla in 2013.
