Wyoming coach Craig Bohl has rare talent in QB Josh Allen, and he sees one of the best to ever play the game in the junior who has already created a buzz in NFL scouting circles.
"He's a Brett Favre-type guy," Bohl recently told CBS Sports.
While there is no predicting whether Allen will have a pro career anything like that of the Pro Football Hall of Famer, it's an apt style comparison. Allen features a rocket of a throwing arm, but is prone to his share of interceptions, two traits he has in common with Favre. Last year, Allen completed 209 of 373 passes for 3,203 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions for UW. That's a 56-percent completion rate that Bohl wants to see improve in 2017. As for the physical tools, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Allen has all he needs.
He's also trying to learn a few lessons from the mistakes of former first-round pick Johnny Manziel, with whom Allen has been working out, per the report.
"Johnny has been very informative for me," Allen said. "Not just on the field but off the field, staying out of the spotlight, doing the right things."
Manziel, of course, was cut by the Cleveland Browns less than two years after being selected No. 22 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. Manziel, who has been out of football ever since, is attempting a football comeback after battling personal problems that included a stint in rehab while with the Browns.
Staying out of the spotlight, as Manziel has suggested, won't be easy for Allen this fall. Not even from Wyoming.
