York: 49ers 'hit reset' to re-establish winning culture

The San Francisco 49ers are set to enter 2017 with their fourth head coach in four seasons after firing Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke.

The full-house cleaning comes as owner Jed York decided to sweep all the remnants of the previous regime out the door.

"I just think it's time for us to re-establish a championship culture," York told TheMMQB.com's Peter King. "In order to do that, I thought we had to clean house."

The disconnect between Baalke and his coaching staffs helped lead to the quick spiral of a franchise that was one win from back-to-back Super Bowl appearances just four seasons ago.

Since then, Jim Harbaugh was forced out. Jim Tomsula was a trainwreck. And Kelly couldn't make magic with a talent-poor roster.

Per King, Kelly lost most of his allies in the 49ers building, including Tom Gamble, who had been with the coach in Philadelphia.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Good Morning Football on Monday that the 49ers swept out the entire brass to get everyone on the same page. Moving forward, York wants to hire a coach/GM combo that will work in tandem, perhaps even hiring a pair together or one with a previous relationship to ensure cohesion.

"What went wrong, I think, was a disconnect at the top," York said. "Not seeing the roster the same way, not being on the same page in personnel. That's why I think it's important to hit the reset button."
