Texas Appleseed
Criminal Justice Reform
One of the 17 Appleseed centers, Texas Appleseed promotes social and economic justice for all Texans by leveraging the skills and resources of volunteer lawyers and other professionals to identify practical solutions to difficult systemic problems.
Grant Partner Since: 2021
NFL Funding Supports:
- Texas Appleseed's efforts at the local level to cancel cities' contracts with OmniBase, a program that allows courts to prevent renewal of the licenses of people who have been unable to pay fees or fines, as well as local advocacy efforts to build momentum for statewide change.
- Building on existing state legislation that criminal charges do not stop Texans with prior criminal justice involvement from fully participating in the workforce and their communities.
- Reforming harmful debt collections practices so Texans can better assert their rights and can be assured that a basic amount of money will be protected from seizure by a creditor.
- Ongoing outreach and communications efforts, including meetings with key policy stakeholders, placing stories in major state and local media, publishing blog and social media posts on topical issues, and engaging with Texas Appleseed's 30+ coalition partners.
