Nick Sundberg
LONG SNAPPER
WASHINGTON REDSKINS
The 2019 season has been yet another season of giving for Redskins Long Snapper Nick Sundberg. Nick and his wife, Flor, have continued their support of the Redskins Loads of Love program through way of monetary donations and event support. Launched in 2017 in conjunction with Nick and Flor Sundberg and the Redskins Charitable Foundation, Loads of Love aims to install laundry facilities in schools and non-profit organizations to directly impact children experiencing homelessness or an unstable living situation at no cost to them or their families. The goal is to remove a barrier for child attendance and participation in programs and sports by providing them a discreet solution to the challenge of having clean clothes. During 2019 Training Camp in Richmond, Virginia, Nick spent his day off helping to renovate the Loads of Love laundry center at George Washington Carver Elementary School, a Title I school in the heart of Richmond City, where nearly 20% of the student population was chronically absent during the 2018-2019 school year. Nick and Flor, along with several other Redskins players, spent the morning painting, cleaning, building and beautifying the space, before installing brand new washers and dryers for the Carver Community. Later that afternoon, it was announced that an additional seven schools and non-profits in Richmond, Va. would receive $48,500 in grant funding to open their own Loads of Love (LOL) laundry centers to serve children in their community.
The new locations joined five existing sites in the Richmond area and together will impact nearly 2,500 children annually. To date, the Redskins Charitable Foundation has provided nearly $500,000 in funding to 52 Loads of Love sites, thanks in large part to Nick.
Since joining the team in 2010, Nick has been a staple in the Redskins community. Attending weekly community events, Nick discovered a passion early on for giving back to members of the DC community and beyond. In past years, Nick has attended events around the NFL's Play 60, Crucial Catch and My Cause, My Cleats initiatives, and numerous Season of Giving events held by the team including the team's annual Harvest Feast and Skins Santa Shoppe. In addition to his work around the Loads of Love program, Nick has given back in other ways this season and in previous years. Nick continues to support youth football initiatives in his home state of Arizona, by donating funding for equipment to the football program at Phoenix Christian and other schools in the Phoenix area. He and punter, Tress Way, have also held long snapping and punting camps for individuals in the area who are looking to gain more experience in two very niche aspects of the game of football. Nick is also a regular at the team's annual All-Star Survivors Celebration, where 30 local women battling breast cancer enjoy a day of pampering at Redskins Park. Not only has Nick shown commitment to causes that are most important to him, he has embraced the issues that are most prevalent in his communities and tackled them head on.
Nick has always demonstrated the idea of identifying an issue that needs to be addressed, and actively working towards solving it. He has visited numerous Loads of Love sites since the program's inception as a way to make a personal connection with the individuals that the program is serving and to learn how the program can be enhanced for future LOL sites. His contributions to the community range from financial gifts, to event appearances, to providing supplies and equipment for those in need. In honor of National Laundry Day and in support of Loads of Love, Nick and Flor announced a match of any donations up to $25,000 to the Loads of Love program starting April 15, 2019 through May 15, 2019. Nick's proactive approach to community outreach continues to be practical and he truly believes in going where the need is greatest, as demonstrated throughout his tenure in Washington.
Through the Loads of Love program, Nick has created a legacy that will last far beyond his playing career. Nick is the first player in team history to establish a signature program with the Redskins Charitable Foundation during his time with the team. His impact on the DC community is unmatched and often times overlooked, due to the nature of his position on the field. Nevertheless, his contributions to this time, both on and off the field are unparalleled and his support from the local community is unwavering.
