The NFL Scouting Combine has come and gone, and the calendar flipping over to March means only one thing on the road to the 2015 NFL Draft: pro days. College Football 24/7 will be your one-stop shop for information on workouts from Alabama to Yale and everybody in between. Here's a look at the key takeaways from Wednesday's pro day action.
Texas A&M: Knee rehab sidelines Ogbuehi
Big draw:OL Cedric Ogbuehi
Don't forget:WR Malcome Kennedy
Notable attendees:There were 28 NFL clubs in attendance, but no head coaches. Colts assistant coach Alfredo Roberts and San Diego Chargers assistant Kevin Spencer were on hand.
The Skinny:Ogbuehi's pro day participation was limited to interviews with NFL clubs, as his rehabilitation from a torn ACL is ongoing and kept him from working out, according to HoustonTexans.com. He reiterated Wednesday that he'll be full go for training camp and said he would begin running in two weeks. Guard Jarvis Harrison arrived late to the pro day and said his wristwatch alarm clock did not go off on time. Kennedy, an experienced receiver in the Aggies' no-huddle system, recorded a 4.56 40-yard dash, according to the school. Perhaps more impressive, however, were the 4.92 and 4.90 times clocked by tight end Cameron Clear. It was a significant improvement over the 4.98 he ran at the combine. Reportedly, Clear met with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns Wednesday, and has a private workout scheduled with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mississippi State: Unheralded linebacker shines
Big draw:LB Benardrick McKinney
Don't forget:DE Preston Smith
Notable attendees:There were 29 clubs represented at MSU's pro day, including New York Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Roberts.
The Skinny:Linebacker Matthew Wells, at 222 pounds, ran impressive 40-yard dash times of 4.44 and 4.46 seconds, along with a 4.26 20-yard shuttle time. The two big names, McKinney and Smith, both stood on their times from combine testing, but both also looked sharp in positional drills. Defensive back Justin Cox, who ran an impressive 4.36 40-yard dash at the combine, did not participate due to a suspension that finished his senior season (he will have his pro day March 12 at a high school). Cornerback Jamerson Love was clocked at 4.41 in the 40, and running back Josh Robinson turned in 40 times of 4.65 and 4.66. Center Dillon Day put up 23 reps on the bench press, as witnessed by a Kansas City Chiefs scout.
Arkansas: Flowers, Spaight improve 40 times
Big draw:DE Trey Flowers
Don't forget:DL Darius Philon
The Skinny:Flowers, who could land at linebacker in the NFL rather than end, showed scouts what he can do in linebacker drills at the Razorbacks' pro day. He reportedly ran a 4.83 40-yard dash, a full tenth of a second better than his 4.93 time at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Linebacker Martrell Spaight's reported time of 4.73 was better than his combine time by an even wider margin (4.88 in Indianapolis), while Philon ran 4.82. Meanwhile, cornerback Tevin Mitchel -- benched for poor play as a junior in 2013 -- followed a rebound senior season with a 4.41 pro-day clocking.
Purdue: Pair of rushers run swift 40s
Big draw:RB Akeem Hunt
Don't forget:RB Raheem Mostert
The Skinny:Hunt, who was not invited to the combine, clocked a 4.40 and 4.36 in the 40-yard dash. NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt reported Hunt impressed during the positional workout, showing off his ability as a pass-catcher and helping his stock as a late-round prospect. Mostert turned in a 4.32 40, according to jconline.com. ... DE Ryan Russell improved on his 40 time from the combine (4.75) with runs of 4.74 and 4.68 seconds, but he suffered a hamstring strain on the second attempt will work out and was unable to finish his workout, though he tried to. He is scheduled to work out for the Carolina Panthers later this month.
Also in action on Wednesday:Weber State.
On deck for Thursday:Arkansas-Monticello, Clemson, Illinois, Ole Miss, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah State.
