A.J. Jenkins, 49ers rookie WR, reportedly needs to get stronger

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver A.J. Jenkins will need to increase his upper-body strength in order to make an impact this season, according to a report.

Multiple sources told Pro Football Weekly that the first-round pick (No. 30 overall) out of Illinois will have trouble against press coverage if he doesn't bulk up. Jenkins is listed at 6-foot and 192 pounds.

Jeremiah: Return trips unlikely

One source echoed a report from last month that said Jenkins was struggling to crack the second-team offense at 49ers minicamp.

"He hasn't looked very good," a source told Pro Football Weekly. "He displayed some flashes with a few really difficult catches, but he's also looked really bad at times and he seems to have had problems staying on his feet.

"It's early. Maybe he'll show more in training camp."

Jenkins, who signed a four-year contract worth a reported $6.9 million last month, will compete with veterans Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams for playing time.
