Aaron Rodgers in no hurry to make decision on Jets future, dealing with his house amid Malibu fires

Don't expect any major decisions from Aaron Rodgers anytime soon.

The New York Jets quarterback spoke with “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, saying that he's in a holding pattern for his own future while the team figures out who'll be running the Jets' show next season.

"I think everybody understands that it's going to come down to (the) GM and coach and myself, and whether we all want to do a dance together -- or if it's not in the cards," Rodgers said.

The 41-year-old signal-caller is coming off a 5-12 season with the Jets one year after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in the 2023 season opener. Things have not gone well for the franchise, which fired head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas in-season, since Rodgers arrived.

The Jets remain headlong in the process of finding their replacements. Rodgers said he's had "limited communication" with those who remain the franchise -- including owner Woody Johnson -- about whether he might want to spend his 21st NFL season with them or not.

"As far as my own decision, I told them I'm going to take some time," Rodgers said. "They haven't even made a decision on the GM or a coach yet. Once that happens, then that'll take us to the next step which is a conversation, I'm assuming, with whoever that individual is."

Rodgers' recent attention has been paid most toward the still-burning California wildfires, owning a home in the Malibu area. The good news is that Rodgers' home has not been affected yet.

"I've been dealing with trying to protect my house over here," Rodgers said. "My house is fine. I'm not in the areas that have been affected. But it's been a weird time for so many people that live down here. … It's been a tough time for sure."

Rodgers said the tragedy hasn't changed his perspective on where he might want to play next season, or whether he even wants to play.

"Listen, I've sat in a hole in the ground in Nowheresville, Oregon, and I've sat in numerous ayahuasca ceremony circles, so I've done a lot of contemplating in my time and gotten some good perspective adjustments over the years," Rodgers said. "This is nothing that changes my perspective, other than it's heartbreaking."
