Aaron Rodgers is taking his time deciding on whether he'll join the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the four-time NFL MVP is crossing every T and dotting every I as he does his due diligence.
That evaluation includes getting to know new Steelers receiver DK Metcalf.
Rodgers and Metcalf had a throwing session over the weekend at UCLA, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported on Monday, per sources informed of the workout.
It's another box-checking move for the 41-year-old, who met with the team 10 days ago in Pittsburgh. By all accounts, the get-to-know-you meeting went well as Rodgers weighs joining the Steelers versus waiting for another landing spot to materialize or possible retirement.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Monday at the NFL's Annual League Meeting that he appreciates the chance to get to know a player before they get together.
"We had a really productive day," Tomlin said of the meeting. "He's been in this thing a long time. I've been in this thing a long time. But there's no substitute for intimacy and spending time together and getting to know one another in a non-competitive environment. So, that was really good. But I don't have any new updates in terms of where the process is. We'll see where it leads us."
Tomlin reiterated that he's not putting a timeline on Rodgers to make a decision.
"I'm really comfortable with being unsettled at this time of year, to be quite honest with you. It's about talent acquisition," he said. "We've got two main means of acquiring talent -- free agency and the draft. We multitask. We do both. Those needs that we fulfill in free agency, we do so there, and when we don't, we fulfill it in the draft. I just learned over the years that this time of the year, although day to day it could be somewhat uncomfortable, it is a process."
With organized team activities not starting for the Steelers until April 21, at the earliest, Rodgers isn't missing much by taking his time. If he continues to work out with Pittsburgh players like Metcalf, he's ahead of the game if he chooses to join Tomlin's crew.
