Agent: 49ers CB Adams' ankle recovering ahead of schedule

San Francisco cornerback Phillip Adams, who sustained a severe left ankle injury during the 49ers' second-to-last game of the season, is healing well ahead of schedule, *The Sacramento Bee* reported Monday, citing Adams' agent.

Adams, a seventh-round draft pick from South Carolina State in 2010, is running and making cuts, agent Scott Casterline told the newspaper.

Adams sustained the injury on a kickoff return, and it was so serious he remained in St. Louis to have surgery on it after the Dec. 26 game against the Rams. The procedure included having screws inserted to stabilize the break above the joint. Casterline said the screws since have been removed and that Adams likely will resume training with former NFL cornerback Kevin Smith in Texas later this month.

Adams was a special teams standout for the 49ers, being active for all 15 games until he was injured.
