INDIANAPOLIS -- Anthony Davis is ready to make his return to the NFL.
After announcing his temporary retirement last June, the sturdy 49ers offensive tackle plans to apply for reinstatement to the league, a source familiar with his plans told NFL Media's Rand Getlin on Friday.
The Niners -- who saw a rash of veterans retire last offseason -- still own his rights. Davis does intend to play for the 49ers again, per Getlin.
It's welcome news to general manager Trent Baalke, who said at this week's NFL Scouting Combine, per the San Francisco Chronicle: "I've had some contact with him, but I have no idea what his status is at this point."
Davis made it clear that he planned to return this season after an injury-plagued 2014 campaign that saw the right tackle endure a concussion and start just seven games.
His return to the fold would serve as a major boost for new coach Chip Kelly. Plugging Davis back into the right side would allow the Niners to pull the ineffective Erik Pears out of the lineup and give this offense a dash of hope for 2016.
