The New Orleans Saints have added veteran linebacker/defensive end Anthony Spencer.
The 31-year-old veteran signed a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.
The eight-year pro had played his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys. Spencer had his best year under Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan when the two were with the Cowboys in 2012, tallying 11 sacks and 55 tackles.
Spencer suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for all but one game of the 2013 season. He played a rotational role for the Cowboys in 2014, compiling just 22 tackles and 0.5 sacks in 457 snaps as a defensive end.
Spencer's familiarity with Ryan's system and the ability to play in multiple fronts should benefit the Saints, who have been looking to upgrade a disappointing front seven. Given that he's on the downside of his career, Spencer likely came at a bargain price for a team in need of veteran pass rushers.
