Anthony Spencer to undergo knee surgery for Cowboys

The news for the Dallas Cowboys' defense keeps getting worse. At least it's only July.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett confirmed Tuesday that defensive end Anthony Spencer will undergo surgery on his troublesome knee later this week. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that the surgery will be arthroscopic and is considered minor, according to a source who had spoken with Spencer.

Spencer is expected to miss two to four weeks but will be ready in time for the season. He hurt his knee during the team's conditioning test.

For the Cowboys' sake, this hopefully is a case of a player getting a potential problem solved before meaningful action starts. The team already lost Spencer's backup, Tyrone Crawford, for the season. Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff also hurt himself during the team's conditioning test. DeMarcus Ware is coming off an injury.

This is a veteran group without a lot of depth behind it. The Cowboys are transitioning to a new 4-3 scheme under Monte Kiffin. We were highly critical of the Cowboys' change in defensive scheme this offseason. All of these injuries will make Kiffin's job even tougher.
