Auburn Tigers DE Dee Ford to miss season opener

Auburn defensive end Dee Ford's knee injury is significant enough that he has been ruled out for the Tigers' season opener against Washington State.

According to al.com, Ford's return isn't even as certain as the second week of the season, describing the time he will miss as "extended." Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson confirmed Ford will miss the first game. He led AU in sacks last season with six.

Ligament damage to Ford's knee, suffered Aug. 10 in a scrimmage, is not expected to require surgery. Veteran LaDarius Owens is among the AU veterans that could help fill the void left by Ford, a senior.

Due to his size (6-2, 240), Ford's NFL hopes will likely require a switch to linebacker.
