The Cleveland Browns got plenty of bad news from the training room Thursday night, but the early word on Barkevious Mingo is less dire.
The rookie pass rusher was hospitalized overnight after suffering a bruised lung in Thursday's 24-6 preseason win over the Detroit Lions.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport initially reported that Mingo, selected No. 6 overall in April's draft, was expected to leave the hospital by noon ET Friday, according to a person who spoke with the outside linebacker. Browns coach Rob Chudzinksi, however, told reporters Friday that Mingo will spend another night at the Cleveland Clinic.
"Well, he had a bruised lung, so every time there is that type of injury, they just want to make sure everything is OK with his health and breathing and everything else," Chudzinksi said.
Mingo -- who was hurt on a kickoff -- is scheduled to undergo X-rays Monday, but he shouldn't miss more than a week, Rapoport was told.
The Browns have dodged a bullet with Mingo, but Thursday night's victory was costly, soiled by a long list of injuries at key positions. We wouldn't be surprised to see Mingo kept in the shadows until Week 1.
This isn't a team built to go two-, three- or four-men deep in the rugged AFC North.
UPDATE:Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer reported Friday night that Mingo could miss more time than previously expected. Cabot quoted a noted thoracic surgeon who said Mingo's bruised lung is "very, very unusual" and needs at least two to three weeks to heal. If that is accurate, Mingo could miss the last two preseason games and possibly the season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 8.
