Bears likely to craft contract for Harris before season starts

For all of the attention that running back Matt Forte is receiving for having outplayed his rookie contract, he isn't the only Chicago Bears star with a gripe.

The Bears have yet to begin discussions with elite safety Chris Harris, who is scheduled to make just $1.5 million this season in the final year of his deal. Harris was a key component behind Chicago's defensive resurgence last season, anchoring the secondary and performing at an All-Pro level. He also became a vocal leader and locker-room spokesman for the team.

Harris gambled on himself a year ago, accepting a paycut and a reworked deal to facilitate a trade from the Carolina Panthers to the Bears. The thinking was that if he performed as expected, a new, longer-term deal was on the horizon.

Harris held up his end of the bargain and hasn't complained or said a word about his deal.

The expectation is the Bears would approach Harris this preseason about a new contract. While those conversations have yet to take place, according to league sources, the Bears likely will make Harris a proposal this month.
