Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams showcases arm, improv skills in preseason debut

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams displayed the full package in his preseason debut on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills.

The No. 1 overall pick showed off his laser arm, improv skills and an ability to make difficult throws look easy in two field goal drives.

In the opening series, Williams zipped the pigskin to DJ Moore on a third-and-12 to convert a first down. He then invited pressure on a screen and slung a half-look pass to running back D'Andre Swift for a 42-yard gain.

On the second drive, Williams showed his ability to throw on the move, darting a pretty sideline ball to tight end Cole Kmet on the roll. The rookie also scrambled for a first down on a third-and-9 play.

In two drives, the Williams-led offense generated 147 yards and seven first downs, while the QB went 4-of-7 passing for 95 yards with 13 rushing yards. The only negative was each possession stalled inside the 20, settling for field gials instead of TDs.

Williams displayed everything we'd come to expect entering the NFL. He showed the ability to escape pressure, wasn't rattled. He displayed a cannon for an arm combined with excellent accuracy, especially on the move, while also sporting an ability to overcome bad situations through improvisation. Williams' worst play was a flat-footed throw from his own end zone on the second drive that was nearly intercepted, but a Buffalo penalty negated the play.

The expectations for the No. 1 pick were already Willis Tower-high in Chicago. Saturday's performance will keep them in the stratosphere.
