The New York Giants added a developmental quarterback in Davis Webb during the draft to a quarterback room that includes starter Eli Manning and veteran backups Geno Smith and Josh Johnson.
With Webb needing tutoring and Smith still learning the offense after changing locker rooms at MetLife Stadium, Giants coach Ben McAdoo doesn't want his starting quarterback doing more teaching than preparing. Coming off one of Manning's least efficient seasons, McAdoo said Tuesday night he wants his starter to focus on improving himself in 2017.
"Eli needs to do his job, he needs to focus on getting ready to go out and play at a high level this year and be a good teammate like he always is,'' McAdoo said, via the New York Post. "I'm sure the young guy is going to have some questions for him, but it's not Eli's job to get anybody ready to play this season and it's not Eli's job to go out and develop another quarterback. That's not his job description. His job is to prepare and perform.''
Manning struggled to push the ball vertically last season, leading to an over-reliance on Odell Beckham run-after-the-catch plays to spark the offense. The Giants since added big-bodied wideout Brandon Marshall and first-round tight end Evan Engram to buoy their aging passer.
Manning has owned the starting job for Big Blue since Week 11, 2004. With the addition of Webb and Smith, the quarterback room has never been more crowded during Manning's Ironman stint.
"Any time you have players in the room with the skill sets that they have, you want to go out and perform well. I think Eli is going to prepare to go out and play at a high level, like he always does," McAdoo added.
