Bills release punter Brian Moorman, sign Shawn Powell

The two-time All-Pro spent his entire 12-year career with the Bills. The Buffalo News' Tim Graham tweeted that the Bills made the move because Moorman struggled with directional punts.

The Bills re-signed rookie Shawn Powell to replace Moorman. Powell was considered one of the top punters in the country during his senior season at Florida State. The two competed during training camp after the Bills brought in Powell as an undrafted rookie.

Moorman's 32.7 net punt average ranks No. 31 in the NFL, but his release was a surprise, considering his history with the team (he was a seven-time team captain and two-time Pro Bowl pick). Bills running back Fred Jackson tweeted: "WTF??? Released Mooreman??? For What??"

UPDATE: The Bills confirmed the moves later Tuesday.
