The Doug Whaley era marches on in Buffalo.
The Bills announced on Sunday that they have signed the general manager to a multi-year contract extension. Whaley had only one year left on his contract.
"We are pleased to announce a multi-year contract extension with our general manager Doug Whaley," Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a team statement. "Doug has demonstrated an excellent eye for talent and has been an asset to the organization on many levels. I look forward to working closely with Doug and coach (Rex) Ryan for many years to come."
"I am excited for this opportunity Terry and Kim Pegula have given me and my family to continue to work for the Buffalo Bills franchise," Whaley added. "I look forward to getting back to work with our owners, Rex Ryan, Russ Brandon and our scouting staff to build a winning team that this tremendous and supportive fan base deserves."
Despite a disappointing 8-8 season, the Pegulas announced before the Bills' season-ending win that both Whaley and Ryan would return in 2016.
This extension also follows a report from The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci last week that during Terry Pegula's 2015 post-mortem meeting with Ryan and Whaley, the owner gave the duo an ultimatum: make the playoffs or lose your jobs. If that was the case last week, it appears that the owners have had a sudden change of heart -- at least with Whaley -- given time to process how the season transpired.
