The Cleveland Browns have settled on a kicker to start their season.
The team announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Billy Cundiff. Barring something unforeseen, Cundiff will handle kicking duties when the Brownsopen their season Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
To make roster room for Cundiff, the Browns placed offensive lineman Jason Pinkston on injured reserve-designated for return.
The Browns raised eyebrows when they cut both their in-house kickers Saturday, leaving the team with no option on its 53-man roster. Cundiff and Dan Carpenter were invited for workouts Tuesday, but Giorgio Tavecchio entered the mix after Carpenter signed with the Buffalo Bills. Cundiff outperformed Tavecchio on Tuesday at the Browns' Berea complex.
Cundiff was cut by the Washington Redskins last October after missing five of his first 12 field-goal attempts with the team. His previous stop produced infamy, as he badly missed a 32-yard field-goal attempt that cost the Baltimore Ravens a shot at overtime in the 2011 AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots.
Now Cundiff -- a Pro Bowl kicker in 2010 -- gets another chance to put his career back on track. Phil Dawson already is missed in Cleveland.
