Blocked FG keys Penn State upset of Ohio State

A blocked field goal with under five minutes remaining sparked Penn State's 24-21 upset of No. 2-ranked Ohio State on Saturday, dropping one of college football's top contenders into the ranks of the once-beaten.

Penn State safety Marcus Allen blocked a 45-yard attempt by Tyler Durbin, which would have been a career-long. The loose ball was scooped up by Grant Haley and returned for a touchdown to give PSU a 24-21 lead that its defense preserved in the final minutes. Allen leaped directly up the middle of the OSU protection unit to get a hand on the kick.

The Nittany Lions defense recorded back-to-back sacks of Buckeyes QB J.T. Barrett to end the game. Ohio State (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) had not lost to Penn State since 2011.

Trace McSorley completed just 8 of 23 passes on the night, but a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin narrowed the score to 12-7 just before the half, and a two-yard McSorley touchdown run in the second half made it 21-14. The Nittany Lions trailed throughout the game until Allen's blocked field goal.

PSU RB Saquon Barkley rushed 12 times for 99 yards.
