Tampa Bay Buccaneers right guard Davin Joesph will undergo surgery on his left patellar tendon and be placed on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday.
The injury will end Joseph's season, as NFL.com and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport initially reported Friday, after the two-time Pro Bowl lineman was hurt during a 30-28 preseason victory over the New England Patriots.
Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said Joseph, who will have surgery Monday, suffered a torn patellar tendon in the game, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
"It's big, but it's part of what we do, right? You mourn and you move on," Schiano said, according to the newspaper. "That's what you do. That's what we have to do. Davin wants us to do that. He's going to go get surgery and start on his road to recovery, and we've got to fix our sights on how are we going to move forward."
Schiano also said the Bucs first will look internally to fill the hole at right guard. Third-year pro Ted Larsen replaced Joseph on Friday night, but Schiano hinted that other players such as Derek Hardman could be the long-term solution.
Joseph was injured when Buccaneers teammate Donald Penn blocked Patriots rookie defensive end Chandler Jones into his leg with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. After the game, Joseph tweeted that the injury could have been "worse."
