The positive assessments of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon continue to pile up with each new hire.
Coach Lovie Smith gushed about Glennon's strengths in his introductory news conference earlier this month. This week it was newly anointed general manager Jason Licht's turn to jump on the Glennon train.
"I will tell you this. From what I've seen so far, I am impressed with the young kid at quarterback," Licht told NBC Sports Network. "I think he's got three things that you look for in a quarterback. He's an accurate passer, he's very smart, and he's very tough. It's hard to judge a guy in his rookie year."
Licht knows a thing or two about good quarterbacks. The 42-year-old was a scout with the New England Patriots when they drafted Tom Brady. Licht told NBCSN he knew Brady would be special from the start.
"I would say the first training camp when the coaches were buzzing that they had never seen a guy as smart and as in tune with the offense and the defense at the same time," Licht said. "And I just remember he was correcting coaches out on the field during drills and getting into a shouting match with a particular coach, then going back to the film room and finding out that Tom Brady was right.
"And that story about (Brady) going up and shaking (Patriots owner) Mr. (Robert) Kraft's hand and saying this is the best pick you've ever made, that is true and obviously the guy is confident."
Licht said he still has to huddle with coach Smith to evaluate the Bucs' quarterback position moving forward. However, based on each man's initial appraisal, Glennon is looking good for 2014.
