BYU's Hail Mary hero could be 2016 draft selection

A number of notable 2016 NFL Draft prospects worked out at pro days held last week.

BYU

Representatives from 18 NFL teams were on hand for BYU's pro day on Friday. The workout was held indoors and run on FieldTurf.

Defensive end Bronson Kaufusi -- 6-foot-6 7/8, 284 pounds -- stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. Kaufusi had a good pro-day workout. He's strong and moves well, and looked really good in the positional drills.

Wide receiver Devon Blackmon -- 6-0, 186 -- ran the 40-yard dash in 4.51 and 4.55 seconds. He had a 32-inch vertical and 9-foot-7 broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.28 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.22 seconds. He performed 10 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Blackmon had a good pro-day workout and could be a priority free-agent pickup for a team following the draft.

Wide receiver Mitch Mathews -- 6-5 5/8, 222 -- ran the 40 in 4.47 and 4.49 seconds. He had a 36-inch vertical and 10-foot-9 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.25 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.99 seconds. Mathews -- who has 10 3/8-inch hands -- performed 12 reps on the bench press. Mathews -- who had a memorable Hail Mary catch in the season-opening win over Nebraska -- really looked good catching the ball and running routes at BYU's pro day. Mathews appears to be worthy of a late-round draft selection.

Utah

Representatives from 18 NFL teams -- including special teams coaches from the New York Jets -- were present for Utah's pro day on Thursday. A total of 14 Utes players worked out indoors and on FieldTurf.

Running back Devontae Booker -- 5-10 5/8, 216 -- was unable to work out due to an injury, and will have his pro day on April 12 at 10 a.m. PT at Grant High School in Sacramento.

Safety Tevin Carter -- 6-1, 221 -- ran the 40 in 4.53 and 4.55 seconds. He had a 34-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.44 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.23 seconds. He performed 19 reps on the bench press. Carter is a good, tough player, and had a good pro-day workout.

Defensive end Jason Fanaika -- 6-2 1/4, 274 -- ran the 40 in 4.84 and 4.87 seconds. He also performed 29 reps on the bench press.

Punter Tom Hackett -- 5-10 3/4, 198 -- had an excellent workout. He punted the ball outdoors, and showed that he can directional punt and punt for distance. Hackett is very good and will play in the NFL.

Linebacker Jared Norris -- 6-1, 236 -- ran the 40 in 4.73 and 4.74 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.28 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.07 seconds. He performed 19 reps on the bench press.

Linebacker Gionni Paul -- 5-10 1/8, 222 -- ran the 40 in 4.95 and 4.98 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.49 seconds and the three-cone in 7.56 seconds. Paul lacked burst while doing the drills.

Quarterback Travis Wilson -- 6-2 1/4, 232 -- ran the 40 in 4.84 and 4.82 seconds. He had a 32 1/2-inch vertical and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.25 seconds and the three-cone in 7.05 seconds. Some team will bring Wilson into a camp as a rookie free agent because of his size and arm strength.

Linebacker Jason Whittingham -- 6-2 1/4, 238 -- ran the 40 in 4.66 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 35 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-2 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.1 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.9 seconds. He performed 28 reps on the bench press. Whittingham could be a priority free-agent pickup for a team following the draft, and should be a very good special teams player.

Syracuse

Representatives from 30 NFL teams -- including a special teams coach from the New York Jets -- were on hand for Syracuse's pro day on Wednesday. A total of seven players worked out indoors and on a very fast FieldTurf surface.

Punter Riley Dixon -- 6-4 1/4, 220 -- was taken aside for a specific workout by the Jets' special teams representative while the other Syracuse players were working out.

Defensive end Ron Thompson -- 6-3, 257 -- ran the 40 in 4.95 and 4.98 seconds. He had an 8-foot-10 broad jump. He did the three-cone in 7.15 seconds. He worked out as a defensive end and that went well. Thompson also tried working out as a tight end, but he'd never tried it before and didn't look particularly good at it.

Cornerback Julian Whigham -- 6-0 3/8, 199 -- ran the 40 in 4.58 seconds on both attempts. He had a 37-inch vertical and 10-foot-8 broad jump. He performed nine reps on the bench press.

Missouri

Representatives from 22 NFL teams -- including offensive line coaches from the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots -- were present for Missouri's pro day on Wednesday. The workout was held indoors and run on FieldTurf.

Center Evan Boehm -- 6-2 3/8, 306 -- had a good pro-day workout. When he does football drills, Boehm looks pretty good.

Linebacker Kentrell Brothers -- 6-0 1/2, 244 -- ran the 40 in 4.82 and 4.84 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical and did 19 reps on the bench press. Brothers is a good athlete and had a good pro-day workout. He lacks the sort of speed that teams would like at the position.

Offensive guard Connor McGovern -- 6-4, 303 -- worked out at three different positions, offensive tackle, guard and center. He was above average in the workouts that he did.

Tight end Clayton Echard -- 6-4, 261 -- ran the 40 in 4.9 and 4.84 seconds. He had a 30-inch vertical and 9-foot-8 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.64 seconds and the three-cone in 7.24 seconds. He performed 20 bench-press reps. He caught the ball well in the his positional workout.

Running back Russell Hansbrough -- 5-7 7/8, 192 -- ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.66 seconds. He had a 30-inch vertical and 9-foot-6 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.56 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.43 seconds. He had 17 reps on the bench press. Hansbrough caught the ball realyl well in the drills and had a good workout. He should be a rookie free-agent consideration for an NFL team.

Maine

Representatives from 14 NFL teams were on hand for Maine's pro day on March 21. A total of eight players worked out indoors and on FieldTurf. One of those eight players has a chance to be a rookie free-agent pickup.
