Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells sustained a sprained right knee in Sunday's loss to the Steelers, but what that means for his immediate future is far from clear.
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't have an update on Wells' status after the game.
"It's something with his knee," Whisenhunt told reporters. "We'll check him out and see. I don't know if it's a short-term or long-term, I just don't know."
Wells left the game with less than two minutes remaining in the half and was taken to the locker room. He didn't return to the game after initially being listed as questionable, finishing with 12 carries for 42 yards.
With Wells out, the Cardinals relied on backup Alfonso Smith, who had five rushes for 17 yards and capped a long Cardinals drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.
