Battling a shoulder injury, San Diego Chargers rookie cornerback Jason Verrettbeat long odds to suit up for Thursday's game versus the Denver Broncos.
After Verrett aggravated the injury in the second quarter, the Bolts had to be wondering if they should have taken a more cautious approach.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via a person who has spoken to Verrett, the cornerback exited the stadium in a sling and is likely to miss some time with the injury. Rapoport reported later Friday that Verrett will see a specialist early next week to learn the severity of the injury.
The Chargers can take solace in the fact that they have only one game between now and Nov. 15, so there is time to let the shoulder heal.
With Verrett in the lineup, John Pagano's defense forced Peyton Manning's offense to punt on three of their first four possessions in Thursday night's game.
Once Verrett re-injured his shoulder, the Broncos went on a scoring spree, reaching the end zone on four consecutive series.
Brandon Flowers' expected return from a concussion will help the secondary. Perhaps the coaching staff will ease Verrett back in against the Raiders and Rams in Weeks 12 and 13 before taking on a string of contenders to close out the regular season.
