Chicago Bears reportedly aim to sign Jason Campbell

If Jason Campbell bolts in free agency, the Chicago Bears are staring at an empty cupboard behind starting quarterback Jay Cutler.

Harrison: Team needs in free agency

With free agency set to kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 12, Elliot Harrison identifies priorities for all 32 NFL teams. **More ...**

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports the team is interested in re-signing Campbell after he played through a one-year, $3.5 million contract last season. Campbell started just one game for the Bears, a disastrous 32-7 loss to San Francisco on "Monday Night Football" that saw him punished by the 49ers to the tune of six sacks.

Campbell appeared in parts of five other games and -- the 49ers debacle aside -- brings more veteran experience than most of the passers set to hit the open market. Certainly more than Bears third-stringer Matt Blanchard, yet to take an NFL snap.

Matt Moore's decision to re-sign with the Miami Dolphins has altered the quarterback market. Unless they plan to find help in the draft, Campbell is an attractive (and relatively affordable) option for the Bears. If they let him reach free agency, he's likely to find a home elsewhere.
