Chiefs QB Cassel set for opener after first-half exit vs. Packers

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel said his early exit from Thursday's preseason game after a sack was only a safeguard and that he would be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener.

"We were just being cautious," Cassel told The Kansas City Star on Friday. "I wanted to go back in."

Most of the Chiefs' starters played into the fourth quarter of the team's preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers, but Cassel left in the second quarter after being taken down by 340-pound defensive tackle Howard Green. Cassel later said he had the wind knocked out of him.

"Normally, I can take (getting hit by a 340-pound defender)," Cassel said. "I don't know what happened. Actually, I think it was (landing on) the ball more than anything."

Safety Eric Berry, tight end Tony Moeaki and right tackle Barry Richardson all left the game in the first half with injuries. Coach Todd Haley didn't disclose the three players' injuries or if they would be available for the Chiefs' " target="new">season opener against the Buffalo Bills href="">.
