Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Moeaki's left knee injury has been categorized as a torn anterior cruciate ligament, The Kansas City Star reported Friday.
The second-year tight end, who suffered the injury in the team's final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.
"I had no idea at the time how serious it was," Moeaki told the newspaper. "I didn't find out until the next morning."
Moeaki has yet to undergo surgery on the knee, according to The Star.
"Obviously, we're going to miss Tony," quarterback Matt Cassel said. "We're going to have to move forward with somebody else. Whether that means us messing around with some different personnel groups or (having) one of these younger guys step up and filling that role, like Jake O'Connell did last year against Arizona, we'll have to close ranks and move forward."
Moeaki caught 47 passes last season, second only to Dwayne Bowe's 72.
The Chiefs now forge ahead without one of their central targets, but coach Todd Haley isn't about to scrap the team's scheme.
"We're going to be a versatile offense anyway you cut it, I think," Haley said. "We've got a couple of dynamic, talented guys at a number of positions."
