Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms thinks the family name is hurting his brother Matt, a quarterback currently buried on the depth chart with the New York Jets.
Not because of Chris, of course, but because of their father Phil, a top analyst at CBS and a former Giants legend.
"Because dad and I, of course, we know are not the most soft-spoken people in the world. The NFL, as you guys know, coaches are so conservative, very right wing, want everything to be private, don't want anybody to know their stuff," Chris said on WFAN New York this week.
He added: "Now you get a guy like Matt Simms and now Phil Simms knows what this team is doing behind the scenes and maybe he agrees or thinks it's stupid ... I do, I think some of that is part of the politics of the NFL."
The problem with part of Chris' theory is that analysts are brought in during the week and are given tons of freedom. They meet individually with coaches and are clued in on certain plays to help the flow of the broadcast.
If it's a new coach or coordinator, they're even given a crash course on the scheme in order to properly explain it on television.
During his time with the Jets, Matt has talked about the ability to break down film with his father during the offseason, though he rarely throws the family name around. He's been the consummate backup and, over four appearances, went 19 of 39 with one touchdown and interception.
Now that the Jets have Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty, his future is looking a little dim.
Maybe now, Chris' theory will be put to the test.
