INDIANAPOLIS -- Chuck Pagano was in a jovial mood Friday as he joked with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Indianapolis Colts coach, who underwent leukemia treatment during the season, had a full head of hair (where it hasn't naturally receded) and the goatee was back. He said with a smirk that the only limitations ordered from doctors were fewer media responsibilities.
Pagano was in the middle of talking about cornerback Vontae Davis when he accidentally called him Baltimore Ravens fullback Vonta Leach.
"Blame it on the chemo," Pagano said, as the crowd broke out in laughter. "I still got a pass for a few days I think. Who are we talking about?"
Pagano looked healthy with his weight back, but doesn't know if he'll ever be back to "normal."
"I don't know if that'll ever be the same, to be honest with you," Pagano said. "I feel pretty normal now as far as going through the normal stuff that a football coach goes through. Whether it'll ever be exactly the same, I don't think it'll ever be that way.
"I feel good and feel like most of that is behind me."
The Colts will work some West Coast facets into the offense with new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. Bruce Arians was fond of pushing the ball down the field, but that also contributed to Andrew Luck's 54.1 completion percentage. Pagano described some of those tweaks.
"West Coast-style offense, there's obviously a higher completion rate," Pagano said. "Andrew completed probably over 70 percent of his passes while at Stanford.
"I'm sure there'll be things we look at and things we'll look to implement as far as the West Coast concepts goes. Few more check-downs, underneath routes, run after the catch."
Note: Pagano called free-agent punter Pat McAfee a major priority this offseason.
