NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Green Bay Packers linebacker broke his right thumb during Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a source informed of the player's health.
It's the same thumb the linebacker fractured earlier this season. The evaluation process continued Monday as the team determines if Matthews can play through the injury.
That prospect is unlikely, however.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday that Matthews suffered a "repeat injury" and that the training staff "didn't feel very good" about the situation. Matthews suffered a Bennett fracture of his thumb in October, an injury that led to surgery and kept him sidelined for a month.
Matthews might be lucky to operate under a similar schedule this time around.
