The 49ers have more salary-cap room after June 1. They look ready to start spending it.
Colin Kaepernick's agents and the 49ers are scheduled to resume contract negotiations this week with the hope of getting a deal done before training camp, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee first reported the sides will meet face-to-face in Santa Clara.
The team and Kaepernick had previously tabled contract talks while police investigated an April incident involving Kaepernick at a Miami hotel. Contract talks starting again is a strong sign from the 49ers that they aren't worried about the investigation anymore (if they ever were).
"I feel very good there'll be a good resolution, and hopefully a just one, too," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said in April. "I hate to see his reputation be the victim."
Rapoport reported back in April that negotiations between Kaepernick and the team were not going well. Kaepernick is due for a huge contract that should likely approach $18 million to $20 million per season, but there is a lot of ground to cover before a deal is complete. Harbaugh has campaigned publicly for Kaepernick to get paid.
Kaepernick, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton and Alex Smith are all looking for new deals this offseason. Even if the 49ers and Kaepernick aren't close to a deal yet, we still see Kaepernick as the most likely player of the group to sign by September. There's just no way a starting quarterback with an appearance in the Super Bowl and conference title game is going to play for $1 million.
