The Washington Redskins aren't ruling out a return by Robert Griffin III for Week 8. If RGIII's not ready, it will be Colt McCoy's show.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters on Monday that McCoy -- fresh off his successful relief performance in the second half of Sunday's win against the Tennessee Titans -- has moved past Kirk Cousins on the depth chart and will get the start against the Dallas Cowboys next Monday night if Griffin isn't fully recovered from his ankle injury.
"I'd like to make the decision as soon as I can because I'm a big rep guy, and I want to make sure we get the starter ready to go," Gruden said. "Moving forward for the Cowboys, we're going to start with Colt. Kirk's gonna get the reps that he gets and he'll be ready to go in if need be. But Colt will be the starter, I'm planning on Monday night."
The Redskins have an extra day of preparation time with the Monday night game. That works in RGIII's favor, but consider it an upset if he's ready to go.
"We don't want to put him out there at 85 percent," Gruden said. "He has to be 100 percent."
McCoy completed 11 of 12 passes and posted a passer rating of 138.9 in the second half against the Titans. With Cousins' transition into a Human Turnover Machine now complete, McCoy became the obvious starter for Week 8 if Griffin isn't ready. Expect full clarity on the situation by COB on Wednesday.
