Though it's widely assumed the Indianapolis Colts will use the No. 1 overall pick to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck next month, there are no guarantees.
Colts general manager Ryan Grigson told The Indianapolis Star on Monday that -- as is the case with all of Indy's picks -- the evaluation process is ongoing. Grigson did acknowledge the team's first pick is "a little more under the microscope."
Feel free to read into this as you wish. Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III used the combine and his pro day to increase his stock substantially. Could the Colts stun the league (and possibly cause Daniel Snyder's head to explode) by grabbing RG3 ahead of Luck?
"We're going to use the process every minute 'til we're on the clock," he said.
Grigson -- in a conference call with the local media -- also discussed defensive end Dwight Freeney. There's been an exodus of veteran players from the team, but Grigson said Freeney, 32, isn't going anywhere despite his potential value on the trade market. Grigson denied the Colts have looked into moving the seven-time Pro Bowler.
"Everyone knows Dwight's a great player. He's going to be here this year," said Grigson, in his first season as GM. "He hopes and fully expects to be a major contributor and a guy who strikes fear in our opponents and offensive lines every week.
"He's a Colt, period."
Freeney joins recently re-signed wide receiver Reggie Wayne as the only recognizable aspects of the old guard in Indianapolis. As classic rock aficionado Jim Irsay might point out on his Twitter feed, the times they are a-changin'.
