The Indianapolis Colts won't give incumbent Anthony Richardson a leg up in the QB competition with Daniel Jones.
Head coach Shane Steichen told reporters Monday morning from the NFL's Annual League Meeting that Richardson and Jones will split reps this offseason, starting with organized team activities, per James Boyd of The Athletic.
Steichen added that he doesn't have a set timeline for determining his Week 1 starter.
The Colts started the offseason with general manager Chris Ballard saying that the plan was to bring in "real competition" for Richardson, who has struggled to stay healthy and with consistency when he is on the field. The team landed on former New York Giants first-rounder Jones as that competition.
Richardson's familiarity with the offense should give him an advantage early in the process, but it will come down to execution and production at each phase before Steichen selects a starter. While the competition will be breathlessly covered at each step, it makes sense that the battle lasts throughout training camp and into the preseason action for each to get a fair shot at the gig.
OTAs can kick off on April 21 for teams with returning head coaches. Schedules have yet to be announced.
