If you're Jim Caldwell, coach of the 0-13 Colts, the task is crystal clear: piece together a win -- even just one -- over the next three weeks.
When asked about Caldwell's fate, Bill Polian, the Colts vice chairman, squeezed out the kind of lukewarm endorsement Monday that would leave most coaches speed-dialing a realtor.
"My fervent hope is that Jim's job is not in jeopardy because my fervent hope is we don't go 0-16, and we're doing everything we can to try and avoid that," Polian said on his weekly Indianapolis radio show, via The Associated Press.
With games against Tennessee, Houston and Jacksonville on the horizon, it's unclear where that win will happen, especially for a team ranking 29th in scoring and 32nd in points allowed.
It's a franchise facing potentially massive overhaul, with holes that can't be solved by the return of one player -- Peyton Manning -- or the potential drafting of his successor. Caldwell hasn't done nearly enough this season to earn a vote of confidence from above, but, while we're at it, neither has Polian.
