After six months of unemployment, Scott Fitterer is back in the NFL.
The former Carolina Panthers general manager is joining the Washington Commanders as a personnel executive, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported. Fitterer will support the front office and scouting departments in Washington, Pelissero added.
Fitterer began his time in NFL front offices as an area scout for the New York Giants and steadily climbed the player personnel ladder over two decades with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Panthers as GM in 2021. His first shot at the top front office job didn't go as planned, though, as Carolina struggled mightily during his tenure, posting a 14-37 record from 2021-23 in a period that saw Fitterer fire two head coaches (Matt Rhule, Frank Reich) in less than a calendar year.
Fitterer's final pick of significance still holds plenty of importance in Charlotte, where Alabama product Bryce Young is aiming to get his career back on track after a dreadful rookie campaign.
Meanwhile, Fitterer will head to Washington, coincidentally following in the footsteps of former Panthers coach Ron Rivera, who took over the Commanders in 2020 after he was fired by Carolina prior to Fitterer's arrival. The former Panthers GM will work with new Washington GM Adam Peters, who is leading a new era of Commanders football under owner Josh Harris.
