Former New England Patriots center Dan Koppen is close to a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos, a person who has spoken with the player said Monday.
Koppen was released by the Patriots on Aug. 31, along with veteran wide receiver Deion Branch. Koppen had been with the Patriots for nine seasons, winning two Super Bowl titles and making one Pro Bowl team.
J.D. Walton currently is the Broncos' starting center, and C.J. Davis is the backup. Koppen, if he signs, would provide the Broncos with veteran depth at the position. His contract would not be guaranteed, as the signing would come after Week 1 of the regular season.
