Danny Amendola acknowledges Wes Welker's legacy

Since newly signed New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola has been penciled in as "Wes Welker Part 2," we might as well get his opinion on replacing the original.

Breer: How Denver landed Welker

After Wes Welker got the cold shoulder from the Patriots, the Broncos sang a nicer tune, Albert Breer says. **More ...**

"As far as comparisons to Wes, I've been hearing it for a long time," Amendola said during a Friday conference call, according to ESPN Boston. "I watched him play the whole time -- he's a great player, he's had a number of Pro Bowls and done a lot of good things to help the Patriots win. One of my main goals is to fill my role and try to do what I can to now help the Patriots win as well."

Amendola recorded 85 receptions, 689 yards and three touchdowns -- all career highs -- with the St. Louis Rams in 2010. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels held the same position with the Rams in 2011, but Amendola played in only one game that season because of injury.

Amendola might have some Welker-like abilities, but he also can split out wide. Either way, he has a long way to go before matching Welker's five 100-catch, 1,000-yard seasons.
