Darius Slay wants to play one more season; veteran CB hopes to stay with Eagles or return to Detroit

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl cornerback Darius Slay knows he could be a cut candidate heading into the offseason.

Philly could use some additional salary cap space with several high-profile free agents, including defensive linemen Milton Williams and Josh Sweat and linebacker Zack Baun, headed to the market.

During an interview on the St. Brown Podcast, Slay noted that he plans to play one more season. He said he'd like to finish the final year of his contract in Philadelphia but knows the business side might not let that happen.

"I've got one more left (on my contract), but you know how that works," Slay said. "Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain't, we'll see what I'm doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure."

As Slay intimates, the Eagles could rework the corner's contract to lower the cap number and avoid releasing the 34-year-old. With stud rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in place, Philly could use some money saved on veterans in the secondary to keep a piece of its front seven.

Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown prodded Slay for his feelings on Detroit, where the corner spent his seven seasons before Matt Patricia upset the apple cart, leading to a trade to Philly in 2020.

"So it sounds like you don't mind coming back," St. Brown said in recruiting fashion.

Slay chuckled, noting that he prefers to remain in Philadelphia, but if he must move on, a return to the Lions would be option two.

"If it is, it is. If it ain't, it ain't," he says. "For sure, the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit. The main two, the main ones I'd love to be at."

With Carlton Davis headed toward free agency, the Lions do have a need for an experienced corner opposite Terrion Arnold, with 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr. playing just 46 defensive snaps last season.
