Jets expected to release Davante Adams if they can't work out trade

Aaron Rodgers isn't the only big name the New York Jets' new brass will move on from in 2025.

Gang Green is fielding trade calls and plans to release wide receiver Davante Adams if it cannot find a suitor, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday, per sources informed of the decision. Adams has a $38.2 million salary cap number, making the news no surprise, Rapoport noted.

The news comes on the heels of New York announcing its impending split with Rodgers after two seasons.

Adams spent just 11 games with New York after a 2024 midseason trade from the Raiders. Gang Green shipped a conditional third-round pick to Las Vegas for Adams in mid-October.

The Jets hoped Adams' arrival would jumpstart a 2-6 club. It never happened. New York won just three games with the star receiver in the lineup en route to a 5-12 finish.

The move comes with little surprise, given Adams' contract. He was set to earn $35.64 million in base salary each of the next two seasons with zero guaranteed.

The 32-year-old wideout can still generate separation, but the rapport with Rodgers never seemed on par with midseason projections, even with the QB force-feeding the ball Adams' way. In 11 games with the Jets, he posted 854 yards on 67 receptions with seven touchdowns, but it took 114 targets to get those numbers. The inefficiency was something that plagued the entire Jets offense all season.

However, the flashes were enough to believe that Adams can still make plays. The veteran still possesses the type of off-line get-off and route running that should allow him to age gracefully.

For the Jets, parting with Adams should quell any further outlandish thoughts about trading Garrett Wilson, who is coming off his third consecutive 1,000-plus-yard campaign despite playing in offenses that are far from potent. With Rodgers looking Adams' way often, Wilson got lost in the offense, netting fewer than 70 yards eight times after the trade, including each of the final four weeks. The lack of involvement led to some frustration from the young receiver.

The better question is whether the Jets will look to extend Wilson.

With Rodgers and Adams now gone, new coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand must build the offense around Wilson and Breece Hall. Finding a new QB is job one. Getting a complement to Wilson -- as opposed to a replacement -- will also be on the offseason wish list.
