Stanford's David Shaw is in a unique position where he can count on overtures from the NFL each year.
Indeed, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported at the conclusion of the 2015 regular season -- when teams were making coaching changes -- that Shaw was coveted by clubs at the next level. But Shaw says he didn't so much as consider making the jump.
"Never gave it a thought," Shaw told CBS Sports. "Was not even an option. Before the season started, I said 'When those calls start happening later in the year, don't even tell me. Just tell everyone thank you but no thank you.'
"I think what we're building here is so special that I want to be a part of it. I want to be here. I want everyone to know that I want to be here."
Shaw sounds like he isn't wavering in his commitment to the Cardinal now, and he might not anytime soon, or ever. Shaw said in May that he's hasn't interviewed for another job since becoming Stanford's head coach. Of course, leaving the door open to a departure could end up hurting him with recruits, so there's no incentive for him to publicly flirt with the idea of moving on. In terms of recruiting, it's best not leave any wiggle room for opposing programs to use. Florida State's Jimbo Fisher recently said he'd "never say never" about one day moving to the NFL. Shaw chose not to allow for even that much ambiguity in his statement.
And there's no reason for Shaw to be in a rush to coach in the NFL. He's helped build a powerhouse program and he's still young at 43 years old. If he stays on his current track, he should have plenty of opportunities in the future.
